An Elderly, Poor Man is Unexpectedly Rewarded for His Kindness to a Stranger, When He Steps Outside One Morning and Finds a New Sports Car in Place of His Old One
Eighty-year-old Gregory Smith sat on his porch, stunned. He pinched himself twice to make sure he wasn’t dreaming and called for his wife, Cynthia, while looking at the envelope in his hand and then at the shiny sports car in front of his house.
“Cynthia! Cynthia! Come here, quickly!” he shouted, his hands trembling with excitement at the sight of the new car and the absence of the old one.
“What’s wrong with you, Gregory?” Cynthia stepped out, wiping her hands on a towel and frowning. “I burned the pancake because of you! In case you didn’t know, we only have one box of pancake mix left! And you’re just standing here? When are you going to the store?”
Gregory waved his hand dismissively. “Look at this, Cynthia,” he said, showing her the envelope he’d found on their porch. “Inside the envelope were the keys to a car, and our old car is gone! Look over there,” he added, pointing to the spot where he’d parked the old car the night before. “That’s a new car! Who could have done this? What should I do now?”
“And there’s no note inside saying who sent it?” Cynthia asked, confused.
“I’ve already checked the envelope twice. Nothing! What are we supposed to—”
Before Gregory could finish, a car horn interrupted him. When he looked out the front door, he saw his old car parked in front of the house and a man stepping out of it.
Gregory’s eyes filled with tears when he saw who it was. “Oh, my! He kept his promise, Cynthia!” he said, turning to her. Cynthia was smiling, as though she’d known this would happen.
Cynthia was in on the surprise planned for Gregory.
The man warmly embraced Gregory. “How have you been, Gregory? It’s been a while, hasn’t it?”
“Jack? Oh, I can’t believe it… I’ve been well, son. How about you? And, please, tell me it wasn’t you who did all this!” he exclaimed, hugging him back.
“I had to, Gregory. After what you did for me… Who else would show such kindness these days? And you can’t completely blame me for this. Mrs. Smith helped me bring it all together…” he said, smiling.
“To be honest, I tried to refuse him, dear,” Cynthia told Gregory. “But this boy wouldn’t listen to me! And it was so hard to act surprised! I’m terrible at this, aren’t I?” she asked, wrinkling her nose, and Jack laughed.
“I don’t think so, Mrs. Smith!”
Gregory shook his head repeatedly. “So, this old man was completely fooled and had no clue? Oh, what can I even say…”
Both Cynthia and Jack laughed. “Alright, alright, enough talking,” Cynthia finally said. “Now that Jack’s come all the way here for us, we can’t let him leave. Come in and have breakfast with us, Jack, and you don’t need to go to the store, Gregory. We’ve got supplies to last us at least a week… That was part of the plan,” she chuckled as she walked inside, with Jack following close behind.
They all sat down for breakfast, and Jack began to tell the story of his first encounter with Gregory. Cynthia knew some of it but not the whole story.
“So, three weeks ago, Mrs. Smith,” Jack began, “I met your husband at the airport. I was supposed to be on the same flight as him to see my wife. She was in labor, and I was very anxious. In my rush, I didn’t realize I’d mixed up the date on my ticket. It was for the next day. I only realized when I checked in.
“Since there were no available seats that day, Gregory offered me his ticket and said, ‘Son, you MUST be with your wife! Take my ticket, and I’ll use yours.’”
“Well,” Cynthia said slowly, nodding. “I knew about the ticket exchange. But what does that have to do with the cars? I’m still wondering how the car exchange fits in….”
Gregory chuckled. “That’s another interesting part… Before we went to check-in, Jack and I met in the waiting area. We talked casually, my dear, and I mentioned that we were still paying off the old car and couldn’t afford a new one, though our current car was giving us all sorts of trouble… After we exchanged tickets, this boy said, ‘Today we’re swapping tickets; in a few weeks, we’ll swap cars, it’s a promise!’
“To be honest, I didn’t take him seriously! But now that I see that shiny car parked at our door, I regret even mentioning we wanted a new one. Before leaving, he took our address, and look what he did! We can’t keep it, Jack. We appreciate your intentions, but it’s not necessary, son…”
Cynthia nodded. “Gregory is right. We can’t keep the car. I didn’t think much of it yesterday when I met you and you told me about the surprise, but now I regret agreeing. Please, it’s really not needed…”
But Jack shook his head. “Believe me, it’s nothing compared to what you did. Thanks to your husband, I was able to be with my wife and my newborn. Please, I’d feel terrible if you turned down my gift. I insist…”
Gregory and Cynthia couldn’t say no to Jack. They accepted the car, but Jack’s generosity didn’t stop there. He knew that after Gregory retired, he and Cynthia struggled with their mortgage payments, and they hadn’t been able to complete repairs on their house.
So, Jack took care of that too. And one day, he came to visit them with his wife and newborn daughter.
Although they live in different cities, the Smith family feels like Jack is part of their family. The young man checks in on them now and then and ensures they have everything they need, especially after learning that the elderly couple had no children.
