Joe Bryant poses for a portrait in Philadelphia during his playing days.

Joe Bryant, the father of the late NBA legend Kobe Bryant and a former professional basketball player himself, has sadly passed away at the age of 69.

The news was confirmed by La Salle University’s athletics department. Bryant, affectionately known as “Jellybean,” was a beloved figure within the basketball community.

Born and raised in Philadelphia, Joe Bryant played for La Salle University from 1973 to 1975. He then went on to be drafted as the 14th overall pick by the Golden State Warriors in the 1975 NBA draft.

Over the course of his career, he played for various teams, including the Philadelphia 76ers, the San Diego Clippers, and the Houston Rockets. Additionally, he had the opportunity to play professional basketball in Europe, particularly in Italy.

Bryant’s impact extended beyond his playing days. From 1993 to 1996, he served as a member of La Salle’s coaching staff. His commitment to the game and dedication to nurturing young basketball talents made him a beloved figure in the La Salle community.

The basketball world mourns the loss of Joe Bryant, who will be dearly missed by the Explorer family and his loved ones. The Philadelphia 76ers also paid tribute to him, acknowledging his local basketball icon status and the legacy he left behind on and off the court. Their heartfelt condolences go out to the Bryant family during this difficult time.

This tragic news comes just over a year after the devastating loss of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna Bryant. The two were among the nine individuals who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in California in January 2020. The passing of Joe Bryant serves as another reminder of the immense impact the Bryant family has made on the world of basketball.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bryant family as they navigate through this painful loss. Joe Bryant’s memory will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those who knew him and admired his contributions to the game. May he rest in peace.
