With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lord Robert Fellowes, the uncle of Prince Harry and Prince William. At the age of 82, Lord Robert left behind a remarkable legacy.
A pillar of strength during turbulent times
Lord Robert Fellowes was a significant figure in the royal family. He was not only married to Princess Diana but also served as the late Queen’s private secretary from 1990 to 1999.
During the challenging year of 1992, famously known as the “annus horribilis” for the royal family, Lord Robert provided invaluable support to the Queen. Amidst Prince Charles’s troubled marriage, Prince Andrew’s breakup with Sarah Ferguson, Princess Anne’s divorce, and the devastating fire at Windsor Castle, Lord Robert stood by the Queen’s side as a loyal and trusted advisor.
A life of service and dedication
Born in 1941 at Sandringham House in Norfolk, during the darkest moments of the Second World War, Lord Robert’s life was marked by a deep commitment to service. After attending Eton College, he joined the Scots Guards on a short-term commission in 1960. Subsequently, he embarked on a career in banking, working for Allen Harvey and Ross Ltd., a reputable discount brokerage and banking company.
In 1978, Lord Robert married Lady Jane Fellowes at the majestic Westminster Abbey. A poignant memory from their wedding was the presence of Lady Jane’s sister, Diana Spencer, who would later become Princess Diana, serving as a bridesmaid.
Lord Robert’s devotion to the royal family was evident in his years of service within the Royal Household. Starting as an Assistant Private Secretary in 1977, he worked his way up to become Deputy Private Secretary and ultimately Private Secretary, a position he held for an impressive 20 years. His tenure came to an end in 1999 when Robin Janvrin took over the role. In recognition of his unwavering dedication, Queen Elizabeth II honored Lord Robert with the Royal Household Long and Faithful Service Medal.
A life well-lived
Beyond his contributions to the royal family, Lord Robert Fellowes was a loving husband and a devoted father. He and Lady Jane welcomed three children into their lives: Eleanor Ruth Fellowes, Alexander Robert Fellowes, and Laura Jane Fellowes. Together, they built a family that cherished their bond and supported one another through life’s ups and downs.
It is impossible to talk about Lord Robert Fellowes without acknowledging the immense loss the royal family experienced with the tragic death of Princess Diana in 1997. In an interview with The Telegraph, Lord Robert expressed his deep fondness for her, describing her as a remarkable person. He also empathized with the challenges that plagued her life, acknowledging that happiness can be elusive for those facing such difficulties.
Remembering Lord Robert Fellowes
As we bid farewell to Lord Robert Fellowes, we reflect on the impact he had on the royal family and the legacy he leaves behind. His unwavering loyalty and commitment to service were unwavering throughout his life. He will forever be remembered for his dedication, kindness, and the love and support he provided to those around him. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
