Tragedies can strike anyone, even those who least deserve it. Today, we mourn the loss of Zoe McKinney – a bright, talented, and compassionate 17-year-old high school senior. A talented cheerleader, Zoe set out on a hiking trip with her friends, hoping to enjoy a day filled with adventure and laughter. However, fate had something else in mind.
While hiking the Moab Rim Trail, an unfortunate accident occurred. Zoe lost her footing and fell approximately 30 feet off a steep cliff, leaving her friends in shock and distress. Despite their valiant efforts to reach her, the situation turned unsafe, prompting them to alert the Moab City Police Department immediately. With urgency in their hearts, search and rescue teams, along with fire and emergency medical services, tirelessly worked to reach Zoe’s location.
Tragically, Zoe did not survive the fall, and her time of death was pronounced at the hospital. It took two grueling hours for the dedicated search and rescue team to locate her body. The loss of Zoe is immeasurable, and the pain it has caused her loved ones is immense.
Lloyd Gist, Zoe’s senior boyfriend, was not by her side when the accident occurred, as he was staying with his family in Salt Lake City. In an interview with NBC News, he spoke of their deep bond, describing Zoe as a kind, helpful person who touched the lives of those around her. They had been inseparable for almost a year, creating cherished memories together.
According to Iryss Mason, one of Zoe’s close friends, Zoe had a burning desire to help others. In fact, she was actively working on obtaining her EMT license – a testament to her caring and selfless nature. Speaking to FOX affiliate KSTU, Mason fondly remembered Zoe’s dedication to making a difference in people’s lives.
Upon learning of Zoe’s passing, the Grand City School District expressed their deepest condolences to her grieving family. They assured them of their unwavering support and pledged to assist in any way possible. In an effort to aid students in mourning, the school district arranged for on-site therapists who will be available to offer support on Monday. Zoe will forever be remembered by the school district as an outstanding student, and they are committed to honoring her memory throughout her senior year.
Moved by their tragic loss, a GoFundMe campaign was launched to help Zoe’s family with funeral expenses. The campaign received an overwhelming response, raising an incredible $20,838 before its conclusion. This outpouring of support demonstrates the love and respect Zoe commanded within her community.
