Traveling can be tiring, especially for elderly individuals. After a grueling eleven-hour journey, an elderly couple decided to take a break and find a place to rest for a few hours before continuing on their way to visit family. Little did they know that this short stop would turn into a costly experience.
When the couple checked out of the hotel, they were handed a bill totaling $350.00. Shocked by the high charge, the man couldn’t contain his frustration and demanded an explanation for such an exorbitant price. He pointed out that although the hotel was nice, it certainly wasn’t worth $350.00 for just four hours of sleep. The desk clerk simply stated that $350.00 was the “standard rate.”
Unsatisfied with the clerk’s response, the man insisted on speaking to the manager. Understanding the couple’s frustration, the manager listened attentively as they expressed their concerns. The manager then explained that the hotel had an Olympic-sized pool and a huge conference center available for use.
“But we didn’t use them,” the husband replied. The manager, undeterred, mentioned that the couple could have also enjoyed one of the famous shows hosted by the hotel. “We have the best entertainers from New York, Hollywood, and Las Vegas performing here,” the manager boasted.
Again, the husband reiterated, “But we didn’t attend any of those shows.” The manager remained unaffected by their protests, responding, “Well, we had them, and you could have attended.” It seemed that no matter which amenity was mentioned, the husband’s response remained the same: “But we didn’t use it!”
Despite the couple’s logical argument, the manager remained firm in his decision to enforce the standard rate. Frustrated and feeling defeated, the husband eventually agreed to pay the full amount. However, as he didn’t have his checkbook on hand, he asked his wife to write the check instead.
Surprisingly, when the manager received the check, he noticed that it was only made out for $50.00. Confused by the drastic reduction in price, he questioned the wife. “But ma’am, this check is only for $50.00,” he said. With a wit and humor only gained through years of experience, the wife replied, “That’s correct. I charged you $300.00 for sleeping with me.”
Astonished, the manager exclaimed, “But I didn’t!” To which the wife confidently responded, “Well, too bad. I was here, and you could have.” This encounter serves as a reminder that one should never underestimate the wit and resourcefulness of senior citizens. They’ve reached their age by being wise and clever, always ready to defend themselves when necessary.
