Two cubic meters of firewood – the most she could afford after counting every coin in the jar she kept hidden behind the flour.

I’m the one telling you this because I was there that morning, standing at the fence, watching my neighbor try to give away money she didn’t have. She’d been a widow for six years. One stove. One small room she actually heated. The rest of the house she let go cold.

Everyone on our street called her Nena. She never asked anyone for anything.

So when the big truck pulled up, I came out to watch.

The workers kept unloading.

One pile. Then another. Then a third.

Nena came out in her slippers, her hands shaking, counting the logs like each one was a bill she couldn’t pay.

“I only ordered two,” she kept saying. “Please, stop.”

The driver didn’t stop. He let his men finish, then walked over to where she was standing in the cold, holding out her savings.

She pushed the money at him.

He pushed it back.

“It’s already been paid for,” he said.

Nena went still.

“By whom?” she said. “I don’t know anyone who’d do this.”

The driver pulled an envelope from his jacket. Just an ordinary envelope, the kind you’d mail a card in.

He held it out.

“The man who paid said you wouldn’t believe me,” he said. “He told me to give you this so you’d know it was really him.”

Her hands were shaking so hard she could barely take it.

She opened it right there at the gate.

Inside was a photograph. Old, soft at the corners. A boy, maybe ten, standing in front of a house I didn’t recognize.

Nena’s face went white.

She gripped the fence to stay standing.

“This isn’t possible,” she said. “He died. They TOLD ME HE DIED.”

The driver looked at her for a long moment.

Then he leaned closer and said quietly:

“He’s waiting in the truck. He asked me to ask you one thing first – do you still keep his letters under the floorboard?”

What I Knew About Nena Before That Morning

I’d lived across from her for eleven years. You learn things, in eleven years, without ever being told directly.

I knew she made her own bread because I could smell it on Thursdays. I knew she kept a garden that was too large for one person, and every summer she’d press jars of pickled peppers into your hands whether you wanted them or not. I knew her husband, Bogdan, had died of his heart in the winter of 2017, and that she’d stood at his grave in the same black coat she’d worn to every funeral on our street, dry-eyed in a way that scared me a little.

I knew she had a son. Or had had one.

I knew this because of one conversation, maybe three years after I moved in. We were both out raking leaves. She mentioned him the way you mention a room in a house that burned down. Matter-of-fact. Final.

“I had a boy,” she said. “Tomáš. He would’ve been thirty-four.”

Would’ve been.

I didn’t ask. You don’t ask, when someone uses that tense.

She went back to raking. I went back to raking. The leaves went into bags and we dragged them to the curb and that was that.

So when she said he died, they told me he died, I understood the past tense she meant. Not recent. Not fresh. Old grief, the kind that calcifies into fact.

Which is why her face scared me. Because it wasn’t grief I was looking at.

It was something worse. Something that didn’t have a clean name.

The Truck Cab

The driver was a big man. Fifty-something, red in the cheeks from the cold, the kind of guy who’s been driving trucks since before GPS and doesn’t apologize for anything. He wasn’t unkind. But he also wasn’t comfortable standing there holding this woman’s reality in both hands.

He said it again, quieter: “He’s in the truck.”

Nena didn’t move.

I’ll be honest with you. I was at the fence. I was close enough to hear everything, and I still didn’t fully process what was happening. My brain kept trying to file it somewhere sensible and coming up empty.

She looked at the photograph again. The boy. Ten years old, maybe. Standing in front of a house with a red door, squinting into the sun, one hand raised like he was about to say something.

“Where did he get this,” she said. It wasn’t really a question.

“He had it on him,” the driver said. “He said you’d know which summer it was.”

She did. I could see it in her face. She knew exactly which summer.

She folded the photograph very carefully, put it in the pocket of her housecoat, and walked toward the truck.

I followed her to the end of my driveway. I don’t know why. I wasn’t invited. But I couldn’t make myself go back inside.

The passenger door opened before she got there.

A man climbed down. Sixty, maybe. Gray at the temples, thick through the shoulders, moving carefully the way people move when something in their body has been repaired but not fully trusted since. He was wearing a dark jacket, work boots, no hat despite the cold.

He stood on the road and looked at her.

She stopped four feet away from him.

Four feet. After however many years.

Neither of them said anything for a long moment. Long enough that the driver cleared his throat and found somewhere else to look.

Then Nena said, very quietly: “They showed me a death certificate.”

“I know,” the man said.

“They showed me a photograph.”

“I know. I’m sorry.”

“Tomáš.” She said his name like she was testing it. Like it might break.

“Yes,” he said.

What Thirty Years Looks Like

I’m going to tell you what I pieced together over the following weeks, because Nena told me some of it herself, in pieces, over tea I wasn’t sure she actually wanted me to stay for. She’d invite me in and then go quiet for stretches, and I learned to just sit there and wait.

Tomáš had been twenty-two when he disappeared. 1993. The war in Yugoslavia was spreading in ways nobody had a map for yet, and he’d been doing something in the border regions that Nena had never fully understood and Bogdan had refused to discuss. Aid work, they’d told her initially. Then something vaguer. Then a man in a government coat came to the door and told her there’d been an incident, showed her papers, showed her a photograph of a body that she’d had to look at for three full seconds before she nodded, and then she’d spent thirty years knowing her son was dead.

The body in the photograph was not Tomáš.

She didn’t know whose it was. Tomáš didn’t know either, or said he didn’t.

What he did know was that he’d spent the better part of a decade in circumstances he still wouldn’t fully describe to her, and then another two decades building something in Germany, a small freight company, two trucks that became four that became sixteen. A wife. Two daughters who knew about a grandmother in this country but had never met her because their father had reasons he kept to himself.

He’d found out Bogdan died through a cousin. Secondhand. Late.

That was what broke it open, he told her. Bogdan dying without knowing. That was the thing he couldn’t make peace with.

So he’d hired someone to find her. Not hard, it turned out. She’d never moved.

The firewood was his idea. He’d wanted to do something immediate and concrete before he saw her face to face, because he was afraid, I think. Afraid of what her face would do when she saw him. Afraid she’d hate him. Afraid she wouldn’t.

He ordered six cubic meters but told the driver to tell her two. He wanted her to think it was manageable. He didn’t want her first feeling to be overwhelmed.

He’d thought about this. A lot.

The Letters Under the Floorboard

I have to tell you about the letters, because that’s the part I keep coming back to.

When the driver asked her, do you still keep his letters under the floorboard, she’d gone completely still. That was what did it. That was what moved her feet toward the truck.

Because nobody knew about those letters. Not her sister. Not the priest. Not even Bogdan, she told me, though she thought he suspected.

When Tomáš was twelve, thirteen, he went through a phase of writing her notes and hiding them. Under the floorboard in the kitchen, behind the loose brick in the garden wall, tucked inside the cover of a specific book on the third shelf. Little notes. I found a bird feather, I left it in the usual place. I got full marks on the geography test. Don’t tell Tata yet, I want to tell him myself. Ordinary things. Kid things.

When he was older and gone for long stretches, working, the notes stopped. But she’d kept every one of them in a tin under the kitchen floorboard. The same floorboard.

She’d never mentioned this to anyone. It was just hers.

He knew because he’d put them there. He knew because she was his mother and that was their thing, their private, unspoken, nobody-else’s thing.

When the driver said those words, she knew the man in the truck wasn’t an impersonator or a scam or someone who’d read something somewhere. You can’t research a floorboard.

The Afternoon

They went inside together.

I went home.

I made myself lunch and ate it standing at the kitchen window looking at her house. The truck stayed parked on the street. The workers had gone. The firewood was stacked against her fence in three long rows, more wood than she’d burn in two winters.

Around two in the afternoon, her kitchen light came on.

Around three, I saw movement in the garden. The two of them, walking the length of it slowly. He was taller than her by a foot. She was talking, pointing at something. The garden, I think. Probably telling him what she’d changed since he was last there, what she’d planted, what had died.

He had his hands in his pockets. He nodded at everything she said.

At one point she stopped and stood with her back to me and I couldn’t see her face. He said something. She shook her head once, sharply.

Then she reached out and took hold of his sleeve. Just the sleeve. Held it.

They stood like that for a while.

The driver knocked on her door at four and she fed him something, because that’s what Nena does, and he came out looking slightly dazed, carrying a jar of peppers.

Tomáš stayed three days. He slept in the room that had been cold for six years, and Nena opened the vent and let the heat in.

When he left, he kissed her on both cheeks at the gate. She held his face in her hands for a moment, looking at him. Then she let go.

He said something I couldn’t hear.

She said: “Go home to your daughters. Come back in spring.”

The truck turned the corner and was gone.

She stood at the gate a little longer. Then she looked over at me, where I was very obviously watching from my front step.

“You want tea?” she said.

I said yes.

Inside, on the kitchen table, the photograph was propped against the sugar bowl. The boy, ten years old, squinting into the sun, one hand up, forever about to say something.

She put the kettle on.

She didn’t say anything else about it and I didn’t ask.

The floorboard was the same as it had always been.
